Animalia, Invertebrates

An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone. The group includes 95% of all animal species. These animals are divided into two groups, Insecta and Obsolete Vermes.

Key Characteristics:
•It does not have a backbone and spinal column
•Difficult for invertebrates to be adaptive to multiple environment
•They have a fluid-filled, hydrostatic skeleton, like the jelly fish or worm. Other have a hard outer shell, like insects and crustaceans.
They do not have any lungs, so for most of them, the exchange of gases takes place through their skin.
•Some of them are harmful to humans, both directly and indirectly like the Termite, Mosquito, Jellyfish, Housefly.
•They lay eggs, not giving birth to young alive.

Insecta, also known as Insects, have a large number of unique and derived characteristics, although none of these are externally obvious in most species. It is under the subphylum of Hexapoda, translated from the Greek for six legs.
Some of the characteristics includes:
- having the lack of musculature ( the muscles of all or a part of the animal body) beyond the first segment of antenna.
-Johnston's organ in pedicel(second segment) of antenna. This organ is a collection of sensory cells that detect movement of the flagellum. ( the tail-like projection that protrudes from the cell body of certain prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.)
-a transverse bar forming the posterior tentorium inside the head
-tarsi (group of small bones between the main part of the hind limb an the metatarsus in the terrestrial vertebrates) sub segmented.
Obsolete Vermes:
-A obsolete vermes is a worm.
-All worms are bilaterally symmetrical. Meaning, the two sides of their bodies are identical.
-They lack scales and true limbs, though they may have appendages (special body parts) such as fins and bristles.
-Many worms have sense organs to detect chemical changes in their environments, and some have light-sensing organs.
-Worms have no lungs. Instead, they breathe through their skin, so the worm’s environment and the worm’s skin must be moist at all times. This allows the worm to breathe in oxygen.
-Worms do have mouths. Their mouths are actually big enough ad powerful enough to grab a leaf and drag it around. They also have a pharynx (a part of the throat), esophagus, crop (a part of your body where you can store food) and intestine.
-Worms eat so much that they typically produce excrement equal to their own weight every 24 hours.
-Worms prefer to mate or reproduce in warm moist soil and away from light.

  1. I have learnt that invertebrates do not have any lungs, so for most of them, the exchange of gases takes place through their skin.
I have discovered that most invertebrates are organized in a way called symmetrical. Symmetrical organization means when you can draw a line down the middle of the organism and the two sides look like mirror images.

  2. I have learnt that invertebrates the place where the exchange of gases is their skin.
I have discovered that worms eat a lot that they typically produce excrement equal to their own weight every 24 hours.

  3. I have learnt that invertebrates have difficulties adapting to different environments.
I have discovered that the first invertebrates evolved from single-celled to food-eating organisms.

  4. I learned that a worm's mouth is actually strong enough to drag a leaf around. Worms also eat a lot that they need to produce excrement equal to their own weight every 24 hours.

I discovered that in some cases in the invertebrate kingdom the smaller animals sometimes are more successful. Insects are the most common and successful in the invertebrates as well as the animal kingdom. Insects are also the first animals in history to achieve flight.

  5. I have learnt that...
Invertebraes do not have lungs. I have never thought of that, so this clears up my misunderstanding.

    I have discovered that...
Protozoas are invertebrates. Apparently from 'http://www.kidport.com/reflib/science/animals/Protozoa.htm' , protozoas are invertebraes. If that is the case, then what is the difference between 'protozoa' and 'protista'?

    I have discovered that...
Invertebrates were the first animals to evolve.

  7. I have learnt that:
Invertebrates does not have a backbone column it is difficult for invertebrates to be adaptive to multiple environment.

    I have discovered that:
scientists have discovered fossilized burrows and tracks in sediments of invertebrates that dated back nearly 1 billion years ago.

  8. I have learned that insects do not have muscles beyond the first segment of the antenna.

I have discovered that insects breathe through a series of tubes called a tracheal system to perform gas exchange throughout the body. Because of this, if the oxygen content in the air was higher, it would make the insects grow bigger

  9. I have learnt that worms actually do have mouths, which are actually quite strong, considering their size and the rest of their bodies.

I have discovered that Invertebrates occupy more than 30 groups of animals, and make up most of the ecology on earth, more than all the other group added together. Because of this, they are all over the earth, with many different adaptation, which occur over very long periods of time, due to the fact that they cannot adapt easily to their environment.

  11. I've learnt that..
Worms: They are bilaterally symmetrical. They have mouth(Dk where). They eat a lot.

    I've discovered that..
Invertebrates who survived during the Jurassic period, some could still be found in the present world today.

  12. I learnt about the key characteristics of invertebrates and the worms.

    I discovered that:
Invertebrates cover 95% of the animal species.I though vertebrates cover more than invertebrates.

    Questions:

Wheres the other types of invertebrates?
Could you give some definition on some of the words?

  13. I have learnt that worms have mouths; I did not know that before.

I have discovered that the excrement of worms are useful for farmers as it helps to fertilize the soil for crops.

  14. I learnt that worms have mouth.

I have discovered that invertebrates date about 1million years ago.
