Task 2 - Monera, Protista, Fungi

Prokaryotic Cell have
the simplest cell structure,
they do not have most of the
organelles Eukaryotic Cells have.
Monera
The Kingdom Monera consists entirely of the bacteria which are about one micrometer. Despite their small size, bacteria are the most abundant of any organism on Earth.
(1µm = 0.001 mm, 1µm = 0.0001 mm)

- They do not have many structures, they do not have many cell organelles which other cells like the animal and plant cells have. These organisms are the simplest prokaryotic (no membrane - bound organelles) cell structures
- They reproduce asexually
- The Monera cell structure is mostly unicellular and some organisms that form groups or filaments.
- The plasma membrane is made up of lipids and proteins.

Paramecium, a member
of the Kingdom Protista
Protista

Members of the Kingdom Protista are the simplest of the eukaryotes.
Protists are an unusual group of organisms that were put together because they don't really seem to belong to any other group.

- Some Protista perform photosynthesis like plants
- Some move around and act like animal
but protists are neither plants nor animals

Fungi come in a wide variety of sizes and forms, like yeasts that are important in baking and Penicilin which help make medicines.

Mushrooms, a member
of the Kingdom Fungi
- Most Fungi are attached to the substrate (the surface a living organism live on, it can be a rock, a tree log, etc.) they grow on
- Unlike Plants, Fungi do not have chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesis
- All Fungi reproduce by spores.

  1. I have learnt that...
Protistas are eukaryotic, while Moneras are prokaryotic, and that is the main difference between them.

    I have discovered that...
Protistas that photosynthesise are called 'photothrophs', while Protistas that do not photosynthesise are called 'organothrophs'.

  2. I have learnt that...Monera is a kingdom that consists of bacteria. They reproduce asexually, and with a unicellular cell structure. Protista is a group of organisms that are Eukaryotes. They are an unusual group of organisms that were grouped together because they didn't seem to belong to any group. Some can photosynthesize, some can move around like an animal, but they are neither animals or plants. Fungi come in different sizes and forms, ranging from yeasts to mushrooms. They are attached to a substrate. They rely on this as their source of food, as they do not have chlorophyll present and therefore cannot photosynthesize. Fungi reproduces by spores.

I have discovered that...the organisms under Monera actually have some use for humans, despite their reputation of causing disease. They are used to produce certain food that we eat, such as turning milk into cheese or yoghurt. Protista are unicellular, some are multicellular while some are colonial. In the colonial forms, all the cells are grouped together by their similarity and their generalized functions, whereas in the truly multicellular species, the “body” of the organism consists of a variety of types of cells, each type with its own specialized function. Fungi causees a number of plant and animal diseases: in humans, ringworm, athlete's foot, and several more serious diseases are caused by fungi.

  3. 1 thing I have learnt...
All prokaryotes belong to the Monera, which is the most basic of all the kingdoms. Therefore, prokaryotes are the most basic of all life forms.

    1 thing I have discovered...
Protista can survive in almost any condition, due to the fact that their systems are simple, allowing them to adapt easily.

  4. I learnt that Monera, Protistas and Fungi reproduce asexually. And that the Monera are prokaryotic and the plasma membrane is made up of lipids and proteins.

1 think i have discovered that the living body of the fungus is a mycelium made out of a web of tiny filaments called hyphae. The mycelium is usually hidden in the soil, in wood, or another food source.

  5. I have learnt that bacteria are the most abundant life that exists on planet Earth. I also learnt that monera can form groups or filaments and Protista can photosynthesis like plants but also behave like animals.

I have discovered that protists live in any environment that has liquid water available. I also discovered that through genetic research, fungi are actually more closely related to animals than plants.

  6. I have learnt that...
Moneras are prokaryotic cells while Protista are eukaryotic cells.
There are some Protista which can photosynthesize.
Bacteria is the most abundant of any organism on Earth.

    I have discovered that...
Protists are a major component of plankton.
Some fungi can cause serious diseases like ringworms, athlete's foot etc.
    While other can cure diseases.

  7. I have learnt that it is an unicellular cell structure and they reproduce asexually.

I have discovered that the fungus can basically live on anything so long it has nutritions so that it can obtain food from it.

  8. I have learnt that the monera is actually very small and it's plasma membrane is made up of lipids and proteins. I also have learnt that some protista can photosynthesize and some others can move around acting like animals, but protistas are neither plants nor animals.

I have discovered that protista can reproduce sexually and asexually.

  9. I have learnt that:
some Protista absorb nutrients while some photosynthesise. I have understood what are Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes.

    I have discovered that:
most fungi build their cell walls out of chitin. This is the same material as the outer coverings of insects and other Arthropods.

  10. I have learnt that Monera are Prokaryotic cells as they lack membrane- bound organelles and that Protista are Eukaryotic cells as their organelles are membrane-bound.

I have discovered that Eukaryotic Cells depend on oxygen for metabolism.

  11. I learnt about the differences between Monera and Protista.
I discovered that Some protists reproduce sexually (conjugation), while others reproduce asexually (binary fission).

  12. I've learnt that..
Monera: They are the simplest prokaryotic cell structures.
Protista: They have eukaryotic organelles in their cells.
Fungus: The word substrate means: the surface a living organism live on, it can be a rock, a tree log, etc.

I've discovered that.. fungus could be further classified among their own family, Hydnaceae, Cortinariaceae, Geoglossaceae, Sparassidaceae, Pezizaceae, Russulaceae and Tricholomataceae etc.

  13. I've learnt:
key characteristics of the 3 kingdoms

    I've discovered that:
Plants were not the only one in the 5 kingdoms which photosynthesis, Protista can photosynthesis too.I thought it will be like a typical cell but in fact its not.

  14. I have learnt that some Protista will photosynthesise, some will feed on nutrients while some will do both.

I have discovered that many protista are parasitic and lives in ponds

  15. I learnt that Monera are made up of mostly of prokaryotes.

I discovered that some Protista can behave like animals and plants by photosynthesizing and feeding on other eukaryotes.
